Building a New Community in Yakima

Taking Care of the Fatherless & Putting the Lonely into Families

LIGHT OF THE WORLD
God has placed our church right in the middle of one of the poorest neighborhoods and in the center of gangland, Yakima, where we see the impact of poverty, crime, gangs, violence, and hopelessness.
God has called our church to be a light in our community. Jesus said that we are the light of the world and that we should let our light so shine before men that they may see our good works and glorify our Father in Heaven (Matthew 5:14)

THE CHURCH IS RESPONSIBLE TO DO SOMETHING
So, what’s the answer? The Church!
God’s people have always been charged with looking after the widows and orphans. The Bible says that God “puts the lonely in families.” (Ps. 68.6) It also says that His family is the church. So, if we put those two together, we can understand that God wants to put the lonely, the broken, the disenchanted, the fatherless into the church. Therefore, we as the church need to respond to this crisis in our society today by learning to love the families and kids in our communities and by bringing to them the hope of the gospel of Jesus Christ.

AYC, YOUTH, AND FATHERLESSNESS

Our primary ministry is our Agape Youth Center (AYC) which is an afterschool and summer program where we seek to serve kids by providing a safe and positive place for them to come to learn, do crafts, socialize and do fun physical activities. However, we’d like to, and feel called to, do more!

The problems facing the world and, especially youth today, are overwhelming - the pandemic, poverty, homelessness, crime, war, and racial tension. But the problems aren’t just “out there.” They’re in our homes and personal. Problems like domestic violence and suicide are higher now than any other time in history. When we consider the next generation growing up, it gets worse. Despite being the most technologically connected generation ever, Gen Z is actually the most disconnected and depressed generation ever. The technology actually causes them to be disconnected because they're not dealing with real life and they are isolated and lonely and suffering from deep depression. This leads to all kinds of issues.

But the problems go even deeper - the number one problem facing our society today is actually the absence of the father and the breakdown of the family.
We want to do more – by taking care of the fatherless and putting the lonely into families.

BUILDING A NEW COMMUNITY

God calls His church to be a community - not just people going to church on Sunday morning but by actually BEING a community - a community of believers who love each other and demonstrate the light and love of the gospel of Christ to the people around them. We want to do this in our buildings and our campus as well as our outreach ministries.

THE PROJECT – THE VISION

The other 2 homes will be used for mentoring and training young people who will come into the community to learn, and be trained. They will be mentored through real-life experiences, as well as being taught the scripture and the principles of the Bible.

Each of these 2 homes will house six students who will be involved in the mentorship program. These students would be interns working part-time in the church ministries as well as working part-time in the community to learn how to serve in the community and work as a team member with other members.
God has called us to create a housing complex that can be a Community Center for our immediate neighborhood. We have a vision of 4 different homes:

One of the homes will be dedicated as a ministry house where leaders from our church living in the home will use it as a base of ministry to reach out to the youth in our com-munity. Think of it as a safe house where children in our community can come and just hang out - where they can talk, play games, etc., or just be in a safe environment.

The 2nd house will be for a leader - outside of the current leadership of the church – who will come and help lead this ministry.
