The Jimmy Mac Singers.

Bringing the good old hymns to oldsters who know and love them but may seldom get an opportunity to sing them.

Meet Jimmy Mac.

I am forming a group called The Jimmy Mac Singers, which will meet twice a month for practice and will periodically go to assisted living places, senior living groups, or church fellowships to sing hymns for and with those groups. Here's how it will work, although these plans may change a bit as we get rolling.

Practices will be at First Baptist Comunidad Cristiana (FBCC) on the second and fourth Tuesdays. The director will be Kathy Knight from FBCC and the pianist will be Jo Anne Sargent from Bethel Nazarene. Members of this group will come from various churches in Yakima, and all they need to have is a love for hymn singing, and a commitment to meet for practices. Ideally, we would have two practices each month and one performance. But we all have very busy schedules, and it is not really expected that everyone would be able to come to all the practices and all the performances. What I would expect is that the members of The Jimmy Mac Singers would come to as many of each as they could.

As you know, in today's society there's isn't much singing these days of the good old hymns. And many seniors lament that fact. So we would be giving them an opportunity to sing again the hymns they love and grew up with.

Here's something unique. When we go to present the hymns for that evening, the people coming to listen will become participants as well. We will pass out to them copies of the hymns for that night, and they will be able to join in on the singing.

I have also written eight hymns, and I have revised and arranged two spirituals. These hymns have never been sung before so they are entirely new to the hymn singing world, and one or two of them may be included in the various presentations.

Each presentation will include ten hymns, and before we sing each one, I will tell the story behind it - who wrote it and why and its historical significance.

I believe this is a win-win situation. The Jimmy Mac Singers will become a cohesive group and will enjoy making these good hymns available to oldsters who know and love them but may seldom get an opportunity to sing them; and, of course, the attendees will be able to sing them again with the words and music in their hands and The Jimmy Mac Singers in front of them leading the way.

The practices will be at First Baptist Comunidad Cristiana, located at 112 N Pierce Ave, Yakima. All the details are still being worked out, but what I need right now is a list of those who are interested. And, by the way, it would be neat to have some young singers also join us.

So, if you are interested in becoming a Jimmy Mac Singer, please send me an email at thejimmymacsingers@gmail.com. If you know of others who might be interested as well, please let them know about this. I will be trying to get the word out to the media, the churches, and certain organizations. I'd like to see 30 people from the community interested enough to join us in this effort as a charter member of The Jimmy Mac Singers.

When I get the list of those interested, I will finalize the arrangements and contact everyone by email.

Thanks,
Jimmy Mac (aka Jim McAleer)
